1. What Cookies and Similar Technologies Are
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device when you visit a website. "Similar technologies" include pixels and tags, which are small pieces of code that can record activity, as well as browser storage technologies such as localStorage, which websites use to store and remember information. YStudy uses these technologies to make the website function properly, understand how it is used, and, where you have provided your consent, measure and improve our advertising.
We group these technologies into three categories, explained below. Only strictly necessary technologies are used without your consent; all other technologies are used only where you have provided your consent.
2. Strictly necessary (always on)
These are required for the site to function and cannot be switched off. They do not track you for advertising. They include:
Session and security β keeping the site secure and remembering essential settings during your visit.
Your consent choice β remembering whether you accepted or declined optional cookies, so we don't ask every time.
Tool and dashboard storage β YStudy's calculators, checkers and your student workspace use your browser's localStorage to save your progress and saved items (for example your CV, saved courses and funding profile) on your own device, so you don't lose your work. In the current build this information stays in your browser; when accounts are fully live, this data will also be linked to your YStudy account.
3. Analytics and performance (optional)
With your consent, we use analytics technologies to understand how visitors find and use YStudy β which pages are visited, which tools are used, and where people run into difficulty β so we can improve the service. These help us count visits and measure performance. You can decline these without affecting your ability to use the site.
4. Advertising and marketing (optional)
With your consent, we use advertising technologies from platforms such as Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and TikTok. These use pixels/tags to measure whether our ads led to enquiries, to avoid showing you ads for something you've already done, and to help us reach people who may benefit from our guidance. This may involve those platforms receiving information about your visit and setting their own cookies, acting as separate controllers under their own policies.
If you decline advertising cookies, these pixels do not run. You can also manage ad personalisation directly with Meta and TikTok.
5. Your Choices
When you first visit YStudy you are asked to accept or decline optional (analytics and advertising) cookies. You can change your choice at any time using the "Cookie settings" link in the site footer, or by clearing cookies in your browser. Most browsers also let you block or delete cookies through their settings β though blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working.
You can clear the tool/dashboard storage at any time by clearing your browser's site data, or by using any "reset" option provided within a tool.
6. Cookies used (summary)
Because the exact cookies depend on the analytics and advertising tools active on the live site, the production site should publish an up-to-date cookie table (name, provider, purpose, duration) generated from the live configuration. As a summary of categories:
Necessary β consent record, security/session, tool & dashboard localStorage. Always active.
Analytics β site usage measurement. Active only with consent.
Advertising β Meta and TikTok pixels for campaign measurement and targeting. Active only with consent.
7. How this links to your privacy rights
What we do with information collected through these technologies is explained in our Privacy Policy, and your data-protection rights are described in our Data Protection & GDPRTerms of Use page. To ask a question about cookies, contact privacy@ystudy.co.uk.
8. Updating This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy when our tools or providers change. The "last updated" date at the top shows when it last changed.
